Ephesians 5:1 (ESV) Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children.
Ephesians 5:2 (ESV)Walk in love, as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us, a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.
It has been said that we are all self-centered.This is probably true to some degree. Recently, I heard a pastor friend talking about being more altruistic. What does that mean I wondered? Altruistic means selflessness.
I began to think about Jesus. He was our example of perfect altruism. He was always looking out for the needs of others, healing their physical and spiritual bodies and teaching them about the kingdom of heaven. He fed the large crowds that came to hear him teach and healed the little sick girl when the people were wailing of her death outside. Jesus was so much more than just a man. He is our Savior, the Son of God! He gave His life on the cross for our sins. He arose on the third day. And He’s coming back for us, His children.
The hymn refrain by T O. Chrisholm (Public Domain) comes to mind:
Oh to be like Thee, Oh! To be like Thee,
Blessed Redeemer, pure as Thou art;
Come in Thy sweetness, come in Thy fullness;
Stamp Thine own image deep on my heart.
